Oil Slick Contained After Barge Sinks at Aswan Port
The vessel sank to a depth of around 15 metres, leaking fuel and oil from its tank and engines.
An oil slick has been contained after a river barge sank at the High Dam east port in Aswan, prompting an environmental response inside the Lake Nasser shipping port area.
The slick remained within a sheltered section of the port, away from the main watercourse.
According to the Ministry of Local Development and Environment, the vessel sank to a depth of around 15 metres, causing fuel and oil to leak from its tank and engines. The slick measured roughly 200 metres by 100 metres.
Water samples collected from the site showed that some water quality indicators exceeded permitted limits due to a surface layer of fuel and oil.
Authorities coordinated with environment and water police teams to disperse the slick and reduce its environmental impact.
Environmental monitoring and water quality testing are ongoing, with further measures being taken to protect Lake Nasser’s water quality.
