Police Seize 521 Ancient Artefacts in Minya

Egyptian police have seized 521 artefacts dating to the Pharaonic, Greek and Roman periods in Minya Governorate and arrested two men on suspicion of illegal antiquities trading.

The Ministry of Interior said the suspects, both residents of Samalut district, were detained following an investigation by the Tourism and Antiquities Police Sector in coordination with the Public Security Sector and Minya Security Directorate.

Investigators said the men allegedly used their residence to store and trade antiquities. According to the ministry, they admitted obtaining the pieces through illegal excavation at a mountainous archaeological site in Samalut under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, with the intention of selling them.

Specialised authorities examined the seized pieces and confirmed that all 521 are antiquities dating to the Pharaonic, Greek and Roman periods. Legal measures have been taken against the suspects.
