Saudi Embassy Opens Visa Applications Centre in Damascus
The new centre will process applications including visas related to freight deliveries and passenger transport between Syria and Saudi Arabia.
A Saudi visa service centre has opened in Damascus to receive applications, including those related to freight deliveries and passenger transport between Syria and Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi Embassy in Damascus said the centre forms part of wider efforts to strengthen economic ties and support Syria’s recovery. Saudi Ambassador Fahd bin Salem Abu Al-Thnain attended the opening alongside representatives from the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Syrian government bodies.
The opening comes amid expanding Saudi engagement with Syria following the removal of Bashar Assad in December 2024 and the formation of a transitional government. Riyadh has since publicly backed Syria’s unity, sovereignty and stability while supporting renewed economic and diplomatic links.
Saudi Arabia has also pushed through diplomatic channels for an easing of US sanctions on Syria, which Syrian authorities view as important to restoring access to international finance and trade.
Alongside Qatar, Saudi Arabia paid around USD 15 million to settle Syria’s outstanding arrears to the World Bank, reopening the possibility of grants and development assistance from the institution.
In July 2025, Saudi Arabia also announced a USD 6.4 billion investment package covering sectors including real estate, telecommunications and information technology, tied to reconstruction efforts after 14 years of war.
