Dirty Backseat & Pink Seasalt Find Joy in Being Stuck on ‘Yemken’
The two Cairine indie rock rousers deliver a poignant exploration of solitude in the most playful way possible.
Dirty Backseat and Pink Seasalt, two of Cairo’s most compelling indie rock acts, join forces on the dreamy Arabic single ‘Yemken’, an optimistic take on solitude, overthinking, and a YOLO-leaning approach to life.
Produced by Moe Hani (the creative force behind Dirty Backseat) and written by Pink Seasalt, the track folds 90s-inspired indie rock, and dream pop into retro synth textures, and groovy basslines with a subtle disco edge. It sits in that uneasy space between spiralling thoughts, emotional overload and a strangely light, almost playful outlook.
There’s a sense of controlled chaos throughout: a push and pull between melancholy and release. Acid-tinged guitar lines, flashing with hints of Jimi Hendrix-like flair, cut through sweltering synth layers, building a sound that feels both brain-melting and strangely soothing. Pink Seasalt’s laid-back vocal delivery floats through it all, occasionally filtered through vocoder effects in the intro and outro, giving it an underwater, half-dreamed quality. The percussion is kept deliberately understated, more atmosphere than anchor, leaving the pair’s interlocking guitar parts to carry the structure of the track.
It is as captivating as it is interesting and refreshing, and joyful, allowing those who dive deep and those who stick to the simple ends to walk away very satisfied.
