Pink Seasalt Drops Arabic '80s Post-Punk Single 'Mesh Bet2ooly Leh'
The track is a refreshing take on Arabic indie music, combining sonic cues from the likes of The Police and Joy Division.
Rising Egyptian artist Pink Seasalt has released a new single, ‘Mesh Bet2ooly Leh’, a continuation of his recent exploration of Arabic alternative rock.
The track is at turns riffy and eclectic, rooted in the gritty, analog-adjacent world of the post-punk revival circa the 80s, combining introspective lyricism and interlocking guitar riffs that echo sonic cues from the likes of The Police, Joy Division and The Cure. Thematically, though, Pink Seasalt sidesteps the usual tropes of heartbreak, opting instead for a more psychological exploration of obsession, time and human connection. For the young Cairo-based artist, the obsession lies in maintaining relationships with loved ones and friends amid the repetitive, foggy rhythm of city life.
The opening seconds, just before the guitars kick in, might recall the intro to Animal Collective’s In The Flowers. However, the motorik feel of the arrangements echoes sonic cues from the likes of The Police, Joy Division and The Cure, balanced out with undertones of retro surf rock and Arabic indie melodies in the synth composition. Pink Seasalt’s unmistakable vocals are delivered in a smooth, rhythmic flow, often mirroring the guitar lines. The melody relies heavily on repetitive hooks, particularly in the chorus, almost like a rhetorical question, painting a picture of his struggle to stay afloat in both love and life.
With ‘Mesh Bet2ooly Leh’, Pink Seasalt returns fully engaged and revitalised, familiar yet more focused, offering a glimpse of the artist we’ve come to know while showcasing a new, exciting artistic development where he’s more confident in his sound.
