Kazdoura Release Retro Turkish-Inspired Neo-Psychedelic EP ‘Khayal’
The EP explores themes of mental struggles and displacement, shedding light on the challenges faced by migrants.
Toronto-based Arabic indie band Kazdoura has released their new EP, 'Khayal', an Arabic interpretation of neo-psychedelia infused with 1970s Turkish rock influences. The EP explores themes of mental struggles and displacement, shedding light on the challenges faced by migrants.
The EP consists of two tracks with a total runtime of seven minutes. The title track features smooth instrumentation that blends neo-psychedelic sounds with rock and jazz elements, creating a vivid and dynamic backdrop that contrasts beautifully with the serene vocals sung in the Syrian dialect by vocalist Leen.
Her lyrics are deeply contemplative and introspective, capturing the unrelenting emotional weight she endures as a migrant. The combination of Leen’s soothing vocal delivery and her poignant lyrics stand out as the highlights of the song.
The second track, 'Marhaba Ahlen', builds on similar themes but with a more vibrant and energetic tone. The instrumentation leans more heavily into Eastern musical influences, featuring impressive synth work that merges with the rock foundation. Leen’s folkloric vocal style enriches the track, adding a layer of authenticity and warmth to the composition.
