Nour El-Sherif, Tamer Hosny, and Zafar El-Abidin almost never made it to your screen - football nearly got there first.

These Arab Starts Traded Their Football Boots for Song and Silver Scre

So many stars and celebrities across the Arab world once dreamed of becoming professional footballers. They carry long and colourful histories with the beautiful game, and stories from childhoods spent on pitches and in training kits, before life steered them somewhere else entirely. Among them are famous singers, silver screen legends, and multi-hyphenate talents. Here are just a few famous names that began their lives on the pitch before taking their talents elsewhere. Nour El-Sherif
No one who knew Nour El-Sherif would be surprised by his lifelong devotion to Zamalek FC — a club he actually joined as a young midfielder. But that sporting chapter never reached its final pages, making room instead for one of the most extraordinary careers in Egyptian cinema. If El-Sherif walked away from football believing he'd only ever be an average player, he went on to become anything but average — cementing himself as one of the most celebrated artists in the history of Egyptian art. And yet the dream never fully left him. He later brought it back to life on screen, playing Zamalek footballer Shahata Abu Kaf in the film 'Gharib fi Bayti' (A Stranger in My Home). Zafar El-Abidin
The Tunisian actor might well have had a remarkable sporting career — had a chronic foot injury not forced him into early retirement. El-Abidin had been playing for Tunisia's Esperance Sportive de Tunis, but after the injury he pivoted to modelling, then stepped into the world of directing and acting, going on to star in acclaimed Arab productions including 'Aroos Beirut', 'Halawet El Donia' and 'Layali Eugenie'. Ahmed El-Sakka
El-Sakka began his sporting life as a youth player at Al Ahly, under coach Ibrahim Abd El-Samad, and also trained at Zamalek's academy under coaches Mohamed Salah and Samir Mohamed Ali. He went on to play for El-Sayed, Arab Contractors, and El-Sharkeya Lel Dokhan — before an injury made the decision for him, and he turned toward acting instead. Hassan Shakoush
The Egyptian mahraganat singer Hassan Shakoush was once a professional footballer, playing for Ismaily, Telecom Egypt, Al Dakhliya, and then Al Ahly — before walking away from the pitch to focus entirely on music. Youssef El-Sherif
The Egyptian actor began his footballing journey with Al Ahly's youth setup, where he played for a stretch until an injury blocked his path to the first team and quietly closed that chapter of his life. He moved into advertising, then acting. But the beautiful game never quite left his imagination — he later played the role of a footballer leading Egypt's national team to the World Cup in the film 'El Alami' (The World-Class Player). Tamer Hosny
In past interviews, Tamer Hosny has spoken about playing at Zamalek for seven years and at Al Ahly for two. When his football journey didn't go the distance, his mother stepped in — encouraging him to study music and take his singing seriously. The rest, as they say, is history. Amr Wahba
The Egyptian actor Amr Wahba started out playing basketball for the Ramses club in Port Said — a career he assessed with characteristic self-awareness in a TV interview: "I wasn't particularly good, but I stuck around because I had good energy." His teammates apparently called him "Qarmousha" — a nickname meaning something close to "breadstick" — on account of his famously slight frame. Nabil Shuail
The Kuwaiti singer Nabil Shuail spent his formative years as a goalkeeper for Al-Qadisiyah Club in Kuwait, before going on to become one of the most important and beloved voices in Gulf and Kuwaiti music. Mohamed Farag
Speaking on the talk show 'Sahibet El Saada', hosted by Esaad Younes, Mohamed Farag recalled a childhood shaped by football — from joining the Habaniya Youth Centre, to moving through Al Nasr, Nile Club, and eventually realising his dream of pulling on the Al Ahly jersey as a youth player. But his path collided with his family's ambitions. They prioritised education over football, and Farag stepped back from the game to honour their wishes. It was through school that he first appeared on a youth theatre stage — and that stage became his gateway to acting. Ahmed Mohamed aka “Afroto”
In an interview with Anas Bukhash on 'ABtalks Music', Egyptian rapper Afroto revealed that he played football professionally as a young man with the Alexandria Union Club — though he was never truly in love with the sport. When he started rapping during his university years and began gaining recognition, the choice was easy. He left football without looking back. As he put it: "I liked football when I was at the club, but once I committed to rap and music, I realised my passion for football was maybe 25% — while my passion for music was well over 100%." Karim Fahmy
Egyptian actor Karim Fahmy had a serious sporting career in his youth — two years at Al Ahly and nine at Zamalek, plus a stint with the Egyptian youth national team under Captain Ibrahim Youssef. In an interview with presenter Mona Abd El-Wahab on Ana Wel Qinaa (Me and the Mask) on Al Hayah TV, he spoke candidly about the challenge of balancing professional football with academics: "I was playing for both Al Ahly and Zamalek while attending a very good school, and the culture gap between the football world and the school world was enormous." Rashed Al-Majed
Saudi singer Rashed Al-Majed spent his younger years as a footballer with Al-Ittifaq Club in Saudi Arabia's First Division League, before trading the pitch for the stage and never looking back. Ahmed Dash
Young Egyptian actor Ahmed Dash began life as a footballer at a club in the Dokki neighbourhood, before becoming a child model and advertising face, then transitioning into acting — where he went on to appear in beloved works including the film 'La Mouakhza', the series 'Sabe Jar', and the series 'Masar Egbari'.
