‘Cartier, Islamic Inspiration & Modern Design’ at Louvre Abu Dhabi
Running until March 24th, the exhibit showcases how iconic French jewellery house Cartier and its visionary artistic director, Jeanne Toussaint, have been profoundly inspired by Islamic art.
Necklaces reminiscent of intricate Arabic calligraphy, a gem-studded bracelet echoing the graceful arches of a mosque - these are just some of the sights on display at ‘Cartier, Islamic Inspiration and Modern Design’, an exhibition that is currently running at the Louvre Abu Dhabi until March 24th.
Featuring over 400 works, the exhibition explores over a century of creative dialogue, showcasing how the iconic French jewellery house Cartier and its visionary artistic director, Jeanne Toussaint, have been profoundly inspired by Islamic art and architecture since the early 20th century. From the geometric patterns of Persian rugs to the vibrant colours of Mughal miniatures, Islamic influences have subtly, yet distinctly, shaped Cartier's design vocabulary.
The exhibition highlights a deep appreciation and thoughtful interpretation of Islamic aesthetics, like with the ‘Tutti Frutti’ necklace, an explosion of emeralds, rubies, and sapphires, echoing the vibrant colours and intricate designs of Mughal jewellery. Or the ‘Panthère’ bracelet with its sleek lines and spotted motif subtly hinting at the graceful movements of a cheetah, a symbol of power and royalty in Islamic art.
Alongside Cartier creations, visitors will be able to encounter masterpieces of Islamic art, allowing them to draw their own connections and appreciate the dialogue between past and present, East and West. This juxtaposition highlights the shared language of beauty and craftsmanship that transcends borders and centuries.
The exhibition also delves into the contemporary resonance of Islamic inspiration in Cartier's design. From the bold geometric patterns of the ‘Clash de Cartier’ collection to the delicate lacework of the ‘Alhambra’ earrings, Islamic influences continue to evolve and inspire the brand's creative vision.
