Y2K After Dark: The School’s in Session Edit

Remember low-rise jeans, butterfly clips, and bedazzled everything? Well, dig out your old Von Dutch hat because the early 2000s are back in full swing. From Blumarine’s SS '22 collection and Versace’s SS '23 runways to the proliferation of vintage stores, Y2K fashion is experiencing a full-blown resurgence.

Back in the day, the hype was all about midriff-baring tank tops paired with camo cargo pants, a Louis Vuitton satchel slung nonchalantly over the shoulder, and strappy kitten heels while chatting on a pink Motorola flip phone—looks that graced the pages of fashion magazines and MTV. Now, these styles dominate the feeds of your favorite models.

This isn’t just a fleeting trend; it’s been gaining momentum since 2023 and shows no signs of slowing down. From the return of Miu Miu's ballet flats and bedazzled butterfly tops to chunky buckles and Blumarine ruffled dresses, the comeback of this era’s kitsch glamour and eclectic mix-and-match style is undeniable.

The trend extends beyond the runway, too. Iconic Y2K brands like Baby Phat, True Religion, Juicy Couture, and even Uggs are experiencing a revival through collaborations with trendy labels like Gianni, Chief Keef, and Madhappy, proving that these throwback styles are still relevant and cool.

But what sparked this resurgence? Like many fashion trends today, it started online, with Gen-Z influencers sparking the trend on TikTok. Gen Z feels nostalgic for the pop culture, fashion, and technology of the late '90s and early 2000s. The younger generation quickly embraced the trend, claiming they were "born in the wrong decade" while sporting Diesel denim bags, embellished jeans, and coquette tank tops.

Feel old yet? Well, many of these items are now labeled as "vintage." In this edit, we explore the most Y2K of them all, with picks from both international and regional brands.
