Photo Exhibition 'Dust: Past and Present' Showcases the Haunting Beauty of Egypt's Abandoned Spaces
Artist Xenia Nikolskaya has brought together twenty-seven photographs of Cairo's haunting locales as part of her ongoing project 'DUST', an exploration of Egypt’s long-forgotten architectural remnants of imperialism.
An untouched room, a forgotten corner - once brilliant and gleaming, now left to gather dust. Spaces that you can just tell have seen better days, yet they remain, oddly compelling in their solitude. You can find many such spaces in Egypt’s abandoned colonial-era buildings, and artist Xenia Nikolskaya has brought together twenty-seven colour photographs of these haunting locales as part of her ongoing project 'DUST', an exploration of Egypt’s long-forgotten architectural remnants of imperialism.
Although Nikolskaya's photographs can be seen as a romanticization of decay and ruin without regard to the people who once lived there or to the history of the place, the photographer conscientiously notes the name of each palace and estate throughout her work, documenting an important and necessary record of these urban spaces, many of which no longer exist or are in the process of demolition.
The photographs are richly printed to bring out the individual texture and fabric of each room, as if one could reach out and feel the different surfaces with their own fingertips.
The exhibition, ‘DUST: Past & Present’, will be held from September 20th to November 12th at TINTERA in Zamalek, which you can find at 17 Bahgat Aly Street.
