Hawanem: The Downtown Cairo Exhibition Celebrating Egyptian Women

In light of International Women’s Day on March 8th, contemporary artist Britt Boutros Ghali pays tribute to Egyptian women in her upcoming exhibition, ‘Hawanem’. The Norway-born artist has chosen Egypt as her home for 45 years. Fascinated by her adopted culture and its women’s strife, her series ‘Women of My World’ is a 20-year retrospective that conceptualizes our narrative perception of womanhood.
“Hawanem is originally a beautiful word. Taken apart from its satirical or misconstrued connotations, it actually means a group of noble women,’ Britt Boutros Ghali tells CairoScene. “When you love an entity and believe in a philosophy you can’t not succeed. That’s the vision behind my work and the exhibition.”
Boutros Ghali’s emotional abstracts and figurative expressionist paintings have been exhibited all over the world, including Norway, Holland, the Czech Republic, and France. She was also a recipient of the Knight of the Royal Order of St. Olav in 1996 for her services in art.
