Red Sea Film Festival to Screen Restored Egyptian & Hollywood Classics

The Kunooz Al-Bahr Al-Ahmar (‘Treasures of the Red Sea’) program at the 2024 Red Sea International Film Festival will feature three Egyptian classics that have been restored in collaboration with Egypt’s Media Production City, alongside Michael Mann’s Hollywood crime masterpiece ‘Heat’.

Running from December 5th to the 14th, the festival will showcase these films at its new location in Al-Balad, Jeddah. The program honours Egypt’s cinematic legacy while highlighting the festival’s commitment to preserving Arab cinema and bringing global classics to local audiences.

‘Eish wa Malh’ (1949) Dir: Hussein Fawzy

In this Egyptian classic, Buthain -, mourning her father's death - finds love with Saber in Cairo's “neighbourhood of bread and salt.” But after becoming a singer for wealthy Bahjat Bey, she abandons him, setting off a series of dramatic twists and turns.

‘Shafiqa wa Metwally’ (1979) Dir: Ali Badrakhan

Helmed by legendary Egyptian-Armenian director Ali Badrakhan and set in the 19th century, the film follows Shafiqa, a young woman from upper Egypt, who moves to Cairo and falls prey to the local Pashas.

‘Edhak, Al-Soura Tila’ Helwa’ (1998) Dir: Sherif Arafa

Starring a young Mona Zaki alongside Egyptian screen legend Ahmed Zaki, the film tells the story of a poor photographer fighting to live a decent life with dignity, while taking care of his mother and daughter.

‘Heat’ (1995) Dir: Michael Mann

A landmark of crime cinema, this Hollywood classic stars Al Pacino as a maverick detective on the tail of a master thief played by Val Kilmer.
