25,000 Green Public Housing Units Will Be Built Between 2023 & 2024
The buildings will be certified by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
The Egyptian government’s Social Housing and Mortgage Finance Fund will launch 25,000 affordable public housing units between 2023 and 2024, all of which will be built to sustainable standards.
Currently, 7,000 green housing units are being constructed during a trial phase, and will be certified by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a global rating system to evaluate a building’s environmental performance and impact. The housing units will be powered by solar energy, built on temperature-resistant materials, and connected to a water treatment system to limit waste.
The announcement was made during the 38th edition of the African Union for Housing Finance conference in Egypt, which brought policymakers across Africa together to discuss eco-friendly alternatives for urban planning.
