Amazon Web Services Hit by Fire After ‘Objects’ Strike UAE Data Center

AWS said that at around 4:30pm UAE time, one of its Availability Zones (mec1-az2) in the ME-CENTRAL-1 Region was hit by objects that caused sparks and a fire, prompting the fire department to shut off power to the facility and its generators. The fire department responded by shutting off power to the facility and its generators as they worked to extinguish the blaze, leaving the zone without power for several hours.

AWS confirmed the outage on its health dashboard, noting that connectivity and power issues had affected APIs and instances in the impacted zone. The company said it was awaiting clearance from authorities before power could be safely restored, warning customers that recovery would take several hours. All other availability zones in the UAE region continued to function normally during the incident.

In a separate development, AWS also flagged connectivity and power issues at its data centers in Bahrain.
