Amr Warda Asks for Permission to Play for Greek Team Instead of Egypt

Egyptian footballer Amr Warda, previously accused of sexual harassment, has formally requested FIFA to allow him to play for the Greek national team instead of Egypt, four years after the 2019 scandal that ended his time with the Egyptian national team following the African Cup of Nations.

“The Football Association told me that I would never play for the Egyptian national team. I got the Greek passport and asked FIFA to allow me to represent the Greek national team instead of Egypt because they don’t want me back,” Warda said in a statement to Masrawy.

In June 2019, sexual harassment claims against Warda surfaced on social media, triggering a national outcry and calls for his exclusion from the Egyptian team. He was initially removed but later reinstated after a public apology. His final match saw Egypt lose to South Africa 1-0.

This was not Warda’s first scandal. In 2017, Portuguese media reported that Warda would leave Feirense just three days after joining, following accusations published on Record that he had harassed the wives of two of his teammates. Shortly after, the Portuguese club terminated his contract.

In 2020, he was at the centre of another scandal after his private messages to a Greek reporter surfaced online.

Warda currently plays for the Greek Super League club Atromitos.
