A massive green sarcophagus that had been smuggled out of Egypt years ago has been repatriated from the United States. The relic was originally made to cover a wooden coffin that belonged to Ankh-en-Maat, a priest from the city of Herakleopolis in Beni Suef.
At over three metres, the sarcophagus is thought to be especially large, and is heavily covered in hieroglyphic inscriptions. The relic was in the possession of Texas’ Houston Museum, and has been safely received by the Consul General of Egypt in Houston.
