CBSE to Introduce On-Screen Marking for Class 12 Exams
From 2026, CBSE will digitise Class 12 evaluation while students continue writing exams by hand.
The Central Board of Secondary Education will introduce on-screen marking for Class 12 board examinations from 2026, replacing the physical evaluation of answer books with a secure digital system. Students will continue to write their exams by hand, but answer scripts will be scanned after submission and assessed online.
More than 1.8 million students sit for the Class 12 board examinations annually, making this one of the board’s most significant operational shifts in recent years. Class 10 answer books will continue to be evaluated in physical mode for now.
Under the new framework, scanned scripts will be uploaded to a secure portal accessible to authorised examiners. Evaluators will assess responses on-screen, record marks directly into the system, and totals will be calculated automatically. The board stated that the change is intended to enhance accuracy and transparency by removing manual tabulation and reducing the physical transfer of answer sheet bundles between centres.
The shift is expected to minimise arithmetic errors in mark aggregation, a frequent cause of post-result verification requests. With digital tabulation embedded in the system, the board indicated that verification related to calculation discrepancies may no longer be required. The model could also contribute to faster result processing by allowing a wider pool of evaluators, including teachers from CBSE-affiliated schools outside India, to participate in assessment.
