Cairo Metro Line One to Be Renovated in October 2024
Throughout the 64-month-long renovation process, the metro will continue to function normally.
Beginning October 2024, a 64-month-long renovation to Cairo Metro Line One by Orascom Construction, Colas Rail and Hitachi Rail will begin, as agreed upon by the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT).
The project aims to enhance the line’s efficiency and capacity, and improve its safety, as it transports over 1.5 million people daily across 35 stations spanning 44 kilometres.
Throughout the renovations, the line is expected to operate normally without interruptions.
With a total value of approximately EUR 800 million, funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the French Development Agency (AFD), the renovation project covers multiple facets. Colas Rail and Orascom will be responsible for upgrading the electrical supply and power lines, as well as the electromechanical systems at the stations, tunnels, and along the railway track, alongside related civil works. Meanwhile, Hitachi Rail will update the signalling, control, and communication systems.
