Egypt’s Population Growth Declined by 8% in 2023
The government aims to further reduce the fertility rate to 1.6 births per woman.
"Egypt witnessed an 8 percent decrease in population growth rate in 2023 compared to the previous year," revealed a statement by Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar.
The birth rate in Egypt reached 2.4 million in 2023, reflecting a decline over the past five years. Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar, the ministry's spokesman, highlighted that Upper Egypt's governorates had the highest birth rates, while governorates including Port Said and Damietta had the lowest rates.
As of January 1, 2024, Egypt's population stood at 105.8 million, with an estimated 12 million Egyptians living abroad. The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) projected that the population could reach 192 million by 2052 if current growth rates persist. However, intensified efforts to reduce fertility rates could lower the projection to 143 million.
Egypt has implemented various campaigns and programmes to address population growth, including the National Population and Development Strategy (2023-2030) and the National Project for Development of the Egyptian Family (NPDEF). The government aims to further reduce the fertility rate to 1.6 births per woman.
