Egypt’s Wheat Imports Hold Steady as Production Rises in 2025
Egypt is expected to import 13 million tonnes of wheat, while domestic production and demand continue to grow.

Egypt’s wheat imports are forecast to remain stable at 13 million tonnes for the 2025-26 marketing year, according to a report from Kyiv-based consulting agency UkrAgroConsult. This comes as improved foreign currency availability facilitates consistent import levels and allows for continued wheat flour exports to markets facing supply disruptions.
Meanwhile, domestic wheat production is expected to rise by 1% to reach 9.3 million tonnes. The increase is attributed to expanded planting areas and improved procurement prices, encouraging more local cultivation.
Wheat consumption in Egypt is projected to grow to 20.4 million tonnes, driven largely by population growth. With the national population expected to reach 124 million by 2030, demand for staple foods continues to climb. Egypt's main wheat suppliers remain Russia, Ukraine and the European Union.
In addition to wheat, Egypt’s corn production is forecast to increase by 3.6% to 7.25 million tonnes in 2025-26. This growth is supported by expanded planting areas and sustained demand from the poultry and livestock sectors. However, Egypt will still rely on imports to meet domestic needs, with corn imports expected to reach 8.7 million tonnes.
As one of the world’s largest wheat importers, Egypt continues to play a key role in global grain markets—balancing rising domestic consumption with steady import strategies and regional export activity.
