In a groundbreaking medical achievement, the Faculty of Medicine at Cairo University’s Kasr al-Ainy has announced the diagnosis of the first case of the rare autoimmune disease VEXAS in Egypt and the Middle East. The diagnosis was made by a specialized medical team from the Chest Diseases Department, led by Dr. Yousry Aql, the department head.
VEXAS, a rare condition that disrupts the immune system, leads to a deficiency in a critical enzyme, which triggers inflammation in multiple areas, including the blood, bone marrow, lungs, joints, and heart muscle. The disease predominantly affects men over 50 and is characterized by recurring infections, prolonged high fevers, laryngeal cartilage inflammation, lung infections, anemia, and rashes.
The diagnosed case involved a 72-year-old patient who had been experiencing persistent symptoms unresponsive to conventional treatments.
