Egyptian Population Growth Rate Reduced by 46% Since 2017
The number of births in 2023 was around 2 million, a 15% decrease compared to 2018.
The growth rate of the Egyptian population has reduced by 46% between 2017 and 2023, down from 2.6% to 1.4% respectively, with a 10% decrease between 2022 and 2023 alone. The 1.4% population growth figure is the lowest it has been in the last 50 years. The number of births in 2023 was around 2 million, a 15% decrease compared to 2018.
These figures are the result of a conscious effort by the government to reduce population growth rates, chiefly through the National Project for Family Development, launched in February 2022. The initiative aims to control unchecked population growth, which puts excess stress on all sectors of the state budget, most notably in education and medical sectors.
