Environment Agency Abu Dhabi Expands AI Desert Vegetation Mapping
The agency reports a 90% cut in operational and administrative costs, plus faster studies, supported by a real-time geospatial analysis platform.
The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi is expanding its desert vegetation classification project to new areas across Abu Dhabi, using artificial intelligence and drones to map and analyse plant cover with greater precision. The initiative integrates spectral signatures with scientific indicators to track habitat changes and support environmental planning and decision-making.
According to the agency, the expansion builds on long-term monitoring efforts assessing the impact of climate change and human activity, including overgrazing and off-road vehicle use in desert ecosystems. Officials said the use of advanced technologies has improved fieldwork efficiency, enabling access to remote areas while reducing the environmental footprint of surveys. The agency reported a 90% reduction in operational and administrative costs, alongside a significant decrease in the time required to complete studies compared with traditional methods.
Specialised teams have used AI and drone-based surveys to collect and analyse detailed data on native plant species and biological indicators, contributing to a deeper understanding of desert habitats.
Earlier phases of the project included documenting wildlife distribution and studying interactions between species and vegetation cover to enhance ecological research. As part of its digital transformation efforts, the agency has developed an integrated geospatial database platform that enables real-time reporting and precise environmental analysis.
The project also includes testing drone-based seed dispersal of native plants in selected areas to study regeneration rates based on rainfall and soil conditions, with ongoing monitoring to assess outcomes.
