First Arab Nuclear Plant Is Now Fully Operational in the UAE

In an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of factories and companies in the UAE, the Barakah nuclear plant was formally inaugurated in Abu Dhabi. As the first of its kind in the Arab world, the Barakah nuclear plant consists of four units, producing 40 terawatt-hours of electricity annually - enough to power 16 million electric vehicles. This makes the plant the largest contributor to carbon footprint reduction in the country and the region.

The plant can currently meet up to 25% of the UAE’s electricity needs without carbon emissions, preventing 22.4 million tons of carbon emissions from being produced annually. This is equivalent to removing 4.6 million cars from the roads each year.

Additionally, the Barakah plants offer significant and diverse economic returns, as the natural gas consumption for power generation in Abu Dhabi has reached its lowest level in 13 years despite increasing demand, due to the substantial contribution of the Barakah plants.
