First-Ever Camel Studies Diploma Program Introduced in Saudi Arabia

The kingdom’s first university diploma in camel breeding and care has been introduced in Saudi Arabia.

The diploma program, a collaborative initiative between the Camel Club and King Khalid University (KKU), represents the first formal academic discipline in the Kingdom dedicated to camel studies. This new educational pathway aims to advance both scientific and practical knowledge in the camel sector, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of camel care, breeding practices and the cultural significance of these animals.

For centuries, camels have been indispensable to the cultural fabric of Arabia and Central Asia, serving as essential companions for desert travel and trade along the ancient Silk Road. Today, Saudi Arabia's camel population stands at approximately 1.5 million, making camel breeding one of the most traditional and significant industries in the country. The new diploma program is expected to elevate the standards of camel care and breeding across the region, ensuring that these practices are informed by the latest scientific research and methodologies.

In 2023, the Kingdom's deep connection with camels was further recognized on the global stage when Alheda’a, a traditional mode of communication with camels, was inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. Additionally, the program will teach students about "camel whispering," a specialized technique used by herders to train camels to recognize commands.
