Egypt is inaugurating the first phase of ‘New Aswan City’, a residential and commercial area just 12 km from Aswan, as part of a sweeping set of developments across the governorate. The new city spans over 22,000 feddans and is expected to provide social housing for more than 850,000 people.
The first phase covers a total area of 183 acres and includes a hotel, commercial shopping area, open-air cinema complex, museum, recreational areas, 150 residential villas and ‘Nile Park’ - a planting sustainability model and the largest green space in Aswan measuring in at 138 acres.
The new city’s design boasts views of verdant green farmland set against amber desert and granite boulders engraved with pharaonic scripts. It is planned with sustainability in mind, cultivating a harmonious union with the city’s culture, heritage and environment, and offering a network of pedestrian walkways, bicycle trails and a tram spanning its length. The project will also house a Magdi Yacoub medical complex, which will offer free healthcare for low-income citizens and carry out charitable endeavors.
This comes alongside Aswan’s broader new visual identity project led by the German University in Cairo, which will be adopted by January 15th. A number of other new urban community projects and residential units in Upper Egypt, including New Qena City, New Assiut City and New Minya City, were also inaugurated.
