Football, GEM & 'Siko Siko': Egypt's Top Google Searches in 2025
The list reflects a surge in AI literacy, a continued devotion to football, and an obsession with local drama hits.
It's that time of the year when technology giants erect giant mirrors of data, and we all collectively gaze into them to learn what we've been up to for 12 months. We won't say no: Google has just released the top trending searches for users in 2025, and we've combed the data to see what Egypt's Google searches say about us. The verdict? That we still love football above all else, that we're becoming more AI literate, and that a nationwide obsession with TV dramas isn't going away any time soon.
Football remains the undisputed king of Egyptian searches. The FIFA Club World Cup and matches involving Al Ahly against opponents like Mamelodi Sundowns, Palmeiras, and Orlando Pirates fuelled passionate queries. On the news front, Egyptians' top searches this year concerned the Iran-Israel war, Gaza, the earthquake that struck Egypt on May 14th, the Ramses Exchange fire, and gold prices.
On the technology front, the results reflect a massive surge in AI literacy and engagement with educational platforms. Egyptians searched for Google Gemini more than any other tech tool, and although ChatGPT was not on the top results list, Chinese-variant DeepSeek was. On the whole, Egyptians in 2025 were massively into new AI assistants, like Grok, Claude, and OpenAI's Sora.
As always, the cultural scene was also vibrant. The opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum and the popularity of movies like 'Siko Siko' and shows like 'Fahd El Batal' reflect a nation still deeply connected to its arts and history.
Elsewhere in the MENA region, Saudi Arabia and the UAE were interested in tech and everything digital, including TV shows, AI chatbots, and - in the case of the UAE - live cricket matches. Like us, Morocco and Algeria remained predominantly concerned with football. In Palestine, education was the highlight, with university portals and high school exam results being the most searched topics. Education was also a top concern in neighbouring Jordan, whereas in Iraq and Syria it was a mix of tech, TV shows, and, of course, football. Iraq had a particular affinity for Egyptian celebrities in 2025, with Ramez Galal and footballer Omar Marmoush being among their top searches.
