Giza Governorate Begins Voluntary Swap of Tuk-tuks for Qute Cars

A voluntary programme has been introduced in Giza allowing tuk-tuk owners to exchange their three-wheeled vehicles for compact, four-wheeled Qute cars. Participation is optional, with tuk-tuk owners applying for the swap through designated channels.

The Qute model features three passenger seats, seat belts, child locks and a dual-fuel system that operates on natural gas and petrol. The vehicle can travel up to 550 km per tank. Financial support is included in the scheme. The Qute car is priced at around EGP 200,000, while tuk-tuks — which have reached prices near EGP 250,000 — qualify for a subsidised package covering a grant, assistance with licensing procedures and a soft-loan mechanism to finance the remaining cost.

The pilot phase is being implemented in districts including Al-Haram, Agouza, 6th of October City and October Gardens.

Additional areas are expected to be added following assessment of the initial rollout. The programme is structured to bring currently unregulated tuk-tuks into a formal system with set licensing standards and predictable fare structures. Officials highlighted improvements in passenger safety, fuel efficiency and vehicle stability as key reasons behind the shift.
