Mariouteya Axis Upgraded Ahead of Grand Egyptian Museum Opening
A comprehensive revamp of Mariouteya aims to ease traffic and enhance public space ahead of the museum’s July debut.

The Giza governorate has completed a major upgrade of the Mariouteya Axis as part of a plan to improve access to the Grand Egyptian Museum, which is scheduled to open on July 3rd, as well as key archaeological sites.
Central to the revamp is the complete lining and covering of the Mariouteya Canal. This intervention has allowed for the transformation of previously neglected areas into service-oriented spaces intended to enhance residents' quality of life. The project addresses longstanding challenges, including the accumulation of waste, irregular parking by microbuses, and persistent traffic congestion.
The covered sections of the canal have been converted into formalised parking areas and dedicated microbus terminals, which are now managed through modern electronic systems. These terminals are expected to reduce unauthorised stops, limit road obstruction, and improve pedestrian movement, all while contributing to a smoother traffic flow in the area.
In addition to improving transportation infrastructure, the project introduces a tourist walkway and expansive recreational spaces along the canal. Specific zones have been developed for restaurants and cafés, designed with upscale and orderly partitions to elevate the area’s visual coherence.
Several primary and secondary streets in the vicinity have also been repaved, upgraded, and landscaped. These enhancements aim to ease vehicle circulation and support the surrounding environment of the Grand Egyptian Museum.
