Ministry of Electricity Launches USD 500 Million Solar Plant in Aswan
The Abydos Solar Plant, built by AMEA Power, will generate clean energy for 300,000 homes, cutting CO2 emissions.
The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has inaugurated the USD 500 million Abydos Solar PV Plant in Aswan.
The plant was developed by Dubai-based AMEA Power, with a capacity of 500 megawatts. It was completed in 18 months and is expected to generate 1,500 gigawatt-hours of clean energy annually, powering approximately 300,000 households and reducing 782,300 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Funded by the International Finance Corporation, the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the plant contributes to the Egyptian government’s plans to increase the share of renewable energy to 42% by 2030, up from 11.5% in 2023.
Additionally, the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has signed a power purchase agreement with AMEA Power for a 500-megawatt wind project in Ras Shukeir, Red Sea Governorate, valued at USD 600 million.
Due to its high solar radiation levels, Aswan is also home to the Benban Solar Park, a 1,650-megawatt facility inaugurated in 2019.
