Ministry of Industry Lifts Ban on Onion Exports From Egypt
The ban has been lifted following data showing a surplus of onion crops in the country.
The Ministry of Industry has lifted the ban on onion exports following indications that there is now a sufficient surplus within the country’s crop reserves, according to data from the end of March. Usually one of the world’s largest exporters of onions globally, shipments were stopped in October 2023 after the price of onions rose steeply on the international market.
The knock-on effect on the retail market within Egypt pushed prices higher than most could afford, as producers took advantage of high prices and exported as much of their crop as they could. Due to the surplus now present within the country after six months, restarting exports is expected not to drastically affect prices on the internal market.
