Ministry of Interior Launches Biometric App for Online Services

The Ministry of Interior launched a mobile application that uses biometric verification to authenticate citizens before they access government digital services. The app is available on Google Play for Android devices in a pilot phase. The ministry described the platform as the first unified national system of its kind designed to secure personal data and protect online transactions.

The app, named MOIEG-PASS, relies on facial recognition technology developed by Egyptian engineers and designed to meet international technical standards, the ministry said. Onboarding screens state that users seeking Interior Ministry services online will be required to authenticate their identity by scanning their national ID card and completing facial recognition. Citizens register using their mobile phone number and national ID details.

According to the ministry, features include identity verification, tracking official requests, and receiving service notifications. The ministry did not specify which government platforms or services will be integrated into the system. Officials framed the rollout as part of ongoing efforts to modernise the ministry’s digital infrastructure and support Egypt’s wider digital transformation, including the use of artificial intelligence to streamline electronic services.

Recent years have seen an expansion of online service delivery and dedicated funding for digitisation initiatives. The Interior Ministry’s website currently offers services including issuing registered birth and death certificates, conducting traffic inquiries, and booking appointments at traffic units. The app’s pilot phase focuses on secure access and identity verification, with further integrations to be detailed by the ministry.
