National Attire Made Mandatory for Saudi High School Students

In alignment with directives from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud to emphasise national identity in the education system, the Ministry of Education has mandated that all male students attending public and private secondary schools are to wear national dress.

With the exemption of students attending foreign schools, all Saudi and non-Saudi male students will wear the thobe and ghutra.

This forms part of the Kingdom’s wider efforts to emphasise national values and identity, in accordance with Vision 2030 goals. This mandate aims to strengthen students’ connection to their heritage, as national dress is a key component of Saudi National Identity.

The mandate will also be followed by the launch of awareness campaigns with the objective of highlighting the relationship between national pride and the national dress policy in schools for parents and children.
