New Factory to Convert Banana Waste Into Eco-Friendly Packaging
The factory aims to produce 60 million cardboard boxes and replace 10,000 tonnes of plastic products per year.
Egypt’s first banana waste recycling plant has been inaugurated by Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad, and Minister of State for Military Production Mohamed Salah El-Din Mustafa. The factory will produce environmentally friendly cardboard packaging from banana fibre waste at the Armoured Vehicles Production and Repair Factory (Military Factory 200).
This initiative, in collaboration with the Australian company Paperius, aims to utilise Egypt’s annual 12 million tonnes of banana waste to create products for the family sector while promoting sustainable practices. The project was implemented in two phases: the first involved establishing a factory in Sohag to convert banana waste into fibres, while the second introduced an automatic production line at Military Factory 200 for manufacturing the eco-friendly packaging.
With an annual production capacity of 60 million cardboard boxes, the factory aims to replace 10,000 tonnes of plastic products per year.
