New Law Defines Structure & Degrees at Dubai Police Academy
A new Dubai law sets governance, academic programmes and service commitments at the Dubai Police Academy.
A new law regulating the structure and academic framework of the Dubai Police Academy has been issued by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in his capacity as Ruler of Dubai.
The legislation defines the academy as a specialised institution for policing, legal and security education responsible for preparing qualified personnel for police, security and military entities. It also outlines the academy’s organisational structure, objectives and academic scope.
Under the law, a Board of Trustees will serve as the academy’s highest governing authority, overseeing strategy, education and training policies, research programmes and academic offerings. The board will also approve the academy’s organisational structure as well as its annual budget and financial accounts.
A Scientific Council will be formed by decision of the academy’s director and chaired by the dean. The council will include assistant deans, heads of academic departments and research units, along with members of the teaching staff or officers. Its responsibilities include proposing policies for education, training and research, reviewing curricula and recommending academic programmes and degree requirements.
The academy offers bachelor’s degrees in Law and Police Sciences, Law, and Security and Criminal Sciences, with the possibility of introducing additional specialisations. The law also provides for higher diplomas in Law, Police Sciences and Security Sciences, alongside master’s and doctoral degrees and professional certificates in technical and specialised fields.
Students nominated to study at the academy must commit to serving in the police force for at least five years after graduation. Those who withdraw, are dismissed or fail to complete the service period may be required to repay the cost of their education and allowances, unless exemptions are granted by the Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police.
The law also mandates digital transformation across the academy including the use of AI and VR.
