New Media Regulations Tackle Sports TV Shows
Sports talk shows will be limited to 90 minutes per episode, and referee performance analysis will be banned entirely.
The Egyptian Supreme Council for Media Regulation (SCMR) is changing the rules for sports television programmes, in an effort to address concerns over controversial practices. These new regulations will go into effect starting January 1st, 2025.
Amongst the key changes is cutting sports talk shows to 90 minutes per episode, and limiting pre- and post-match analysis segments to one hour for both local and international games. Referee performance analysis will also be banned across all media platforms to reduce tensions over decisions made by referees and protect them from fan pressure.
Live sports programmes will no longer be able to air between midnight and 6 AM; only reruns may be aired during these hours. Exceptions will be made for coverage of international matches due to time zone differences.
