Nine New Dams to Protect 13 Flood-Prone Areas Within 19 Months

The President’s Initiative has announced an infrastructure project aimed at addressing flooding and improving water storage in key regions across the UAE. The initiative will see the construction of nine new dams and nine water canals across 13 flood-prone areas. Two existing dams will also be expanded, and rubble barriers will be reinforced. The project is expected to be completed within 19 months.

The affected areas include Sharjah's Shis area and Khorfakkan City, Ajman’s Masfout, Ras Al Khaimah's Shaam and Al Fahalin, and several locations in Fujairah, such as Mohammed Bin Zayed City, Al Hail, Al Qaryah, Qidfa, Marbah, Dhadna, Al Seiji and Al Ghazimri. In total, the upgrades will involve 9 KM of new water canals and significantly increase water storage capacity to 8 million cubic metres.

The decision follows a comprehensive infrastructure review ordered by President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan after April’s record-breaking rainfall.
