Opening Ceremony for Grand Egyptian Museum Set for July 3rd

The opening ceremony for the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has been scheduled for July 3rd, following President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s approval. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly chaired a meeting to review preparations for the event, which is expected to span several days, and showcase Egypt’s cultural and tourism achievements.

The meeting was attended by key ministers, governors, and officials from relevant entities. Discussions covered logistical arrangements, guest invitations, and ministry responsibilities to ensure smooth execution.

The GEM, located near the Great Pyramids of Giza, is set to be the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization. Designed to showcase Egypt’s ancient heritage, it will house over 100,000 artefacts, including the complete collection of Tutankhamun’s treasures, displayed together for the first time. The museum spans 500,000 square metres and features state-of-the-art conservation labs, immersive exhibitions, and a grand atrium dominated by a colossal statue of Ramses II.

The GEM project, initiated in 2002, has been in development for over two decades with an estimated cost exceeding USD 1 billion, supported by international funding, including Japan’s JICA.
