Paediatric Rehab Services Now Available in Public Primary Care Units

Paediatric physical therapy and motor rehabilitation services have been introduced for the first time in Egypt’s public primary care units, expanding access to specialised care under the Universal Health Insurance system. The programme has launched in Port Said, Ismailia, and Aswan, with Luxor set to follow in the next phase.

The new services offer treatment for a range of conditions including cerebral palsy, brachial plexus injuries, spinal deformities, and post-surgical recovery from orthopaedic and neurological procedures. Sports-related injuries are also covered, providing support for children who require targeted rehabilitation.

Four facilities are currently operational: Sheikh Zayed Family Medicine Center in Ismailia, Bilal Ibn Rabah Family Medicine Center in Port Said, El-Bosailia Qebly Family Health Unit in Aswan, and Kom Ombo Child Care Center in Aswan. The El-Awameya Family Medicine Center in Luxor is scheduled to join the network soon.

Each centre is equipped with advanced paediatric physiotherapy devices to support muscle strengthening, joint mobility, and the restoration of natural movement. Treatments are administered by trained professionals specialising in paediatric rehabilitation, ensuring children receive tailored care within their local communities.

With over 80% of healthcare in Egypt delivered through primary care units, the integration of paediatric rehabilitation at this level is expected to reduce pressure on hospital facilities and lessen the logistical burden on families seeking treatment.
