Parliament Proposes Harsher Penalties for Electronic Blackmail
The proposal would add an amendment to the article, in which anyone who divulges matters with the purpose of threatening their integrity would receive 10 years of jail.
A member of the House of Representatives has submitted a proposal to toughen the law on electronic blackmail.
Article 25 of the Penal Code currently stipulates that violations on the sanctity of private life shall be punished by at least six months of imprisonment, and/or a fine between EGP 5,000 and EGP 10,000.
The proposal would add an amendment to the article, in which anyone who divulges matters with the purpose of threatening their integrity and affecting the lives of others would receive 10 years of imprisonment.
The proposal came to light after a recent tragedy in which a 17-year-old student in Gharbiya took her own life. She had been blackmailed with fake photographs. The Public Prosecution is investigating her death as of the time of writing.
