Pet Registration System Will Launch in Abu Dhabi in February 2025
Pet owners will be required to register and microchip pets to reduce abandonment, and help reunite lost pets with their owners.
The Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport will launch the Animal Ownership System on February 3rd. The new system will require pet owners to register their cats and dogs, and have them microchipped in order to minimise pet abandonment, improve animal welfare, and facilitate the reunification of lost pets with their owners.
Pet registration will be handled through veterinary clinics, with annual costs estimated at up to AED 500, which also includes vaccinations.
The initiative comes in response to incidents like the October 2023 abandonment of over 150 cats in the Al Falah desert. David Appleby, founder of microchipped.ae, believes the system will not only benefit pet owners but also aid in controlling stray populations.
The programme complements existing efforts, including retraining pest controllers in humane methods, updated standards for pet shops, and the creation of public education campaigns on managing stray animals.
