Phase Two of Urban Infrastructure Development Project to Begin in 2025

The German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) has announced the second phase of its ‘Capacity Building through Urban Infrastructure Development’ project, set to begin in early 2025. The initiative, which is funded by the German government and the European Union, is being carried out in partnership with Egypt’s Ministry of Housing and the Urban Development Fund.

Following the successful completion of the first phase - which improved urban infrastructure in Alexandria, Beheira and Assiut, benefiting over 750,000 people - the project will now expand its scope to include the governorates of Giza, Aswan and Qalyubia. With a budget of EUR 22 million, the second phase will focus on enhancing basic services, reducing irregular migration, and empowering youth through vocational training.

During phase one, progress was made in upgrading healthcare, education, and transportation services. Key achievements included the renovation of healthcare facilities benefiting 140,000 residents, the restoration of schools serving 7,300 students, and the revitalisation of public spaces used by 185,000 people. Additionally, over 800 individuals received vocational training, improving local employment prospects.

The second phase aims to address similar challenges in the newly targeted governorates, including the development of markets and infrastructure in Aswan’s villages, the upgrading of public schools and markets in Qalyubia, and the modernisation of Edko’s old market and gardens in Beheira.
