Ramses II's Sword Discovered by Egyptian Archaeologists in Beheira

Recent excavations by Egyptian archaeologists have uncovered the sword of Ramses II, one of the most celebrated pharaohs in Egyptian history, in the governorate of Beheira. The sword was discovered among a series of mudbrick architectural units, including military barracks for soldiers and storage rooms for weapons, food and provisions in Tell Al-Abqain, in the Hosh Issa district.

The Al-Abqain fort served as one of the key military posts of the Egyptian army in ancient Egypt, protecting the country’s northwestern borders from invasions by Libyan tribes and ‘Sea Peoples’. At the site, large granaries, ceramic storage jars, ivory kohl applicators, carnelian and faience beads, scarabs and protective amulets were discovered, alongside a sword engraved with cartouche of Ramses II.
