Reactor Core Catcher Installed at Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant’s 4th Unit
Once completed, the plant is expected to supply around 10% of the country’s energy needs.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced the installation of the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant’s fourth nuclear unit.
The core catcher, a safety feature designed for advanced third-generation nuclear reactors, was installed as part of a ceremony organised by the Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA) in the New Administrative Capital. The reactor core catcher is specifically engineered to prevent the spread of radioactive substances and ensure the highest safety standards for the facility.
The project is a joint effort with Russian partners and is Egypt's first nuclear power plant, located in the coastal city of Dabaa, approximately 300 kilometres northwest of Cairo. Once completed, the plant is expected to supply around 10% of the country’s energy needs, producing up to 37 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
Nuclear power offers environmental benefits as it produces no carbon emissions, contributing to efforts to mitigate global warming and combat climate change. The first nuclear unit is scheduled to begin operations in 2028, followed by the other units in 2030.
The event also included a screening of a documentary film, which highlighted the NPPA’s efforts to generate electricity from nuclear energy and the ongoing developments at the Dabaa plant.
