Robotaxi Pilot With Autonomous Uber Rides Begins in Dubai
Autonomous ride-hailing services have entered live testing in Dubai, with robotaxis now operating on selected routes as part of a city-wide mobility pilot.
Autonomous ride-hailing services are now operating in Dubai, with robotaxis officially entering live testing as part of a pilot programme focused on future mobility and smart transport systems.
Rides can be booked in Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah by selecting the “Autonomous” option in the Uber app. The service currently operates with a specialist safety driver on board, with full driverless operations planned for early 2026, according to the Roads and Transport Authority. The rollout follows joint tests between the Roads and Transport Authority and WeRide that began in April 2025 to prepare vehicles for public use.
The robotaxis operate using AI-driven navigation systems that analyse traffic conditions in real time, detect pedestrians and vehicles, and respond dynamically to road environments. Data collected during the pilot will be used to refine autonomous systems and inform regulatory frameworks for future expansion.
The initiative forms part of Dubai’s broader transport strategy, which aims to integrate autonomous vehicles into the city’s mobility network over the coming years. Officials have previously outlined targets to convert a significant share of trips in the city to autonomous transport, reducing congestion, improving road safety and enhancing transport efficiency.
