Rotana Ordered to Pay EGP two Million to Sherine Abdel-Wahab for Deleting Her Songs
The Cairo Economic Court has ruled that Rotana must compensate Egyptian singer Sherine Abdel-Wahab with EGP two million for damages caused by the removal of two of her songs from YouTube and social media platforms.
In a televised statement, Sherine explained that her contract with Rotana covered the production of 12 songs. While the second album was agreed upon by both parties, its release was not mandatory, nor was there a requirement for the album to be launched all at once. Instead, the company opted to release the songs as singles. She emphasized that she fully honoured her contractual obligations and had all songs ready for release.
Despite this, Rotana allegedly sought to monopolize her live performances and refused to accept her songs to maintain control over her concert bookings—despite no contractual clause granting the company a share of her live performance revenues.
In September 2024, amid her copyright battle with Rotana, Sherine made history as the first Arab artist to upload an entire album to WeTransfer, allowing fans to access it directly. The move was widely seen as a bold stand against restrictive music industry contracts.
