Telecom Regulatory Authority to Ensure TikTok Abide by “Family Values”
MPs submitted that TikTok should be monitored to ensure that content in the country abides by Egypt’s “family values”.
The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has denied rumours that TikTok will be blocked in Egypt by next October, after the Communications and Information Technology Committee of the Egyptian House of Representatives requested the Authority to adopt new controls on the media platform.
The Committee submitted that TikTok should be more rigorously monitored to ensure that the accessible content in the country abides by Egypt’s “societal values and customs”.
The NTRA has confirmed that although there is no intention to shutdown the application in Egypt, it will create more stringent oversight mechanisms to ensure that TikTok content does not violate Egyptian “morality codes”.
The Committee stressed the need to immediately start taking legal actions and track down pages that issue an untrue image through videos or live feeds, contributing to the spread of debauchery, especially amongst the youth. The Committee further intends to submit draft legislation to Parliament to tax income made off TikTok content.
