Thousands of Trees Have Been Tagged With QR Codes in Al Khobar
The QR code allows residents to access details such as type, age and care instructions by smartphone. It’s the first stage in a project to document and monitor over 150,000 trees across public spaces.

In Al Khobar, a new initiative is giving public trees a digital profile. Officials have begun attaching QR-coded cards to thousands of trees, allowing residents to access details such as type, age and care instructions via smartphone.
As of August 12th, 10,000 trees have been tagged in the first phase, with the goal of reaching 100,000 before phase two begins, which will cover an additional 50,000 trees. The project spans the corniche, waterfront, main roads, and residential streets, with information available in both Arabic and English. Historical trees are also included in the database.
Authorities say the effort aims to make tree care more accessible while contributing to broader digital transformation plans and environmental awareness goals. The project supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and Saudi Green Initiative, and aligns with Al Khobar’s rise in the global smart city rankings, where it currently stands at number 61.
