Transport Ministry Extends Floating Restaurant Legalisation to 2026

The deadline for fixed floating restaurants and similar establishments to regularise their legal and technical status has been extended to December 31st, 2026, giving operators an additional year to comply with regulatory requirements.

The Chamber of Tourism Establishments and Restaurants said the extension was approved by Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir, following coordination with the General Authority for River Transport under the Ministry of Transport. The decision applies to floating restaurants and venues operating on waterways, including the Nile.

According to the Chamber, owners must submit a detailed technical assessment prepared by a consulting office accredited by the River Transport Authority. The assessment must include underwater inspections and be approved by an Egyptian university with shipbuilding expertise.

Operators are also required to provide proof of a contract with an approved shipyard or workshop at least three months before the deadline, specifying a scheduled dry-docking date. If dry-docking is not feasible, owners must begin constructing a replacement floating restaurant at an approved shipyard in line with the Authority’s specifications.

Establishments opting for full replacement will receive an additional one-year grace period starting after December 2026.
