USD 3 Billion Diesel Production Complex in Assiut Now 78% Complete
The completed refinery is expected to meet 70% of the petroleum demand in Upper Egypt.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, a new diesel production complex in Assiut is now 78% complete.
The project is currently considered to be one of the nation’s most important, valued at over USD 3 billion in investments. It is expected to help meet 70% of the demand for petroleum products in Upper Egypt, in particular high-quality diesel, thus decreasing the region’s reliance on imports.
The Assiut Oil Refining Company (ASORC) already includes two distillation complexes, with a combined refining capacity of 4.5 million tonnes per annum, as well as a high octane gasoline complex, opened by President El-Sisi in 2021.
The high-octane gasoline complex produces approximately 800,000 tonnes of gasoline per annum for the governorates in Upper Egypt, which has decreased the high risks and costs associated with transferring gasoline around the country using trucks.
A third distillation complex is under construction to bring the refining power to 9.5 million tonnes annually. Having reached 33% completion, the new complex will include a unit for liquid petroleum gas (LPG) production.
The refinery is distinguished by its environmentally-friendly waste disposal process, in that the industrial wastewater produced by operations is treated and then reused for the cultivation of the Jojoba plant.
In addition, efforts are being made at present to establish a solar power plant with an electricity production capacity of ten megawatts, using a financial grant from the European Union.
